Fig Trees - Ficus

from $35.00

Big Figs: Desert King, Brown Turkey. Only 1 each of Negrone or Neverella . 5-6 years old. 7-10 gallon pot.

Desert King, Brown Turkey or Olympic:‍ ‍ Available in 2 and 5 gallon pots. 2-4 years old.

October update. We've had a light frost so plants are starting to loose their leaves and going dormant.

Planting in ground, Best to transplant when dormant. If planting in fall, add extra mulch for protection against possible deep freeze. Keep trunk clear of mulch and wrap to prevent rodent damage. Remember to remove in Spring.

Want to wait until early Spring to plant? Once the leaves have dropped and fig is dormant, overwinter potted figs in an unheated greenhouse, cellar, shed or garage. They don't need sunlight once dormant. Keep the soil moist.

Growing in pot has some advantages; You are renting your home and move the fig can come with. If you overwinter in a green house or hoop house get a jump start next spring with a longer growing season. Can also be overwintered outside, protect from strong cold winds and protect roots with mulch or bury in ground.

Bit about the different varieties.

Desert King Figs are dark green skinned fig with pink flesh. Excellent fresh or dried. This variety does well here Zone 8b. If you are colder consider the Brown Turkey or Olympian.

Brown Turkey. Large fruit variety. Best used fresh. Bronze skin red flesh. Hardier than most fig varieties.

Olympian Fig. AKA as English Brown Turkey. most cold hardy fig, reportedly down to zone 6, growing back from the roots at colder temperatures. Large purple skinned, violette flesh fruit.

At my location the Desert King ripens first in August. Other varieties in September until frost.

The 5-6 year trees can be planted in ground best in Spring, which allows the fig to get stronger with growth from Spring-Fall. Planting in fall? If we have a very cold winter they may die back to the ground. This may be prevented with a layer of insulation and mulch.

If you want "Fig Tree" I don't recommend planting in ground until they are at least 5 years old and have out grown out of at least the 5 gallon pot, 10g if you live in elevations over 500'. Unless you want a fig bush! Keep in mind Desert King produce on last years wood, if they freeze back to ground, no figs the following summer.
